Check Mason County Criminal History

A useful check of Mason County criminal history follows the office that made each record. Start with the county courts when the goal is to trace filed charges and outcomes, or call the sheriff and jail when current custody is the main concern. Michigan’s state systems add a broader view, but each leaves out some local or restricted material. Readers who search criminal records in Mason County should compare names, dates, courts, and case numbers, then ask the responsible clerk or agency for an official copy when accuracy matters. That approach reveals far more than a single name search.

Mason County Criminal History Checks

Begin by deciding what event or status you need to confirm. Mason County does not place every criminal record in one database. MiCOURT holds public court events for participating courts, the Sheriff’s Office holds sheriff-created reports, jail staff confirm current Mason County custody, and the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center maintains the state repository. A full name, date of birth, approximate event date, agency, and case or report number can prevent a same-name mismatch.

The best first Mason County path depends on the record. Filed misdemeanors and the first stages of felonies begin with Mason County’s 79th District Court. A felony that is bound over continues in the 51st Circuit Court, where the County Clerk’s Court Services staff performs record searches and issues certified copies. A recent arrest may not yet have a court file, so the Sheriff or Mason County Jail may be the quicker first call.

  1. Choose the correct slice: court case, recent arrest, current custody, statewide history, or MDOC supervision.
  2. Search MiCOURT Case Search by party name or file number, starting with the Mason County court most likely to hold the event.
  3. Compare the Mason County court, birth details when shown, filing date, charges, and case number before treating a result as a match.
  4. For a felony, check both the 79th District and 51st Circuit records because the case may have a file in each court.
  5. Contact the creating agency or clerk for older material, a police narrative, an official register of actions, or a certified copy.

Four Mason County Record Systems Compared

Four common Mason County systems can return four different, yet accurate, answers. MiCOURT is a register-of-actions view for participating courts. ICHAT is the public view of reportable Michigan criminal-history cycles sent to the state repository. Mason County Jail staff deal with current county detention, while MDOC’s OTIS covers state prisoners, parolees, probationers, and people discharged from MDOC supervision within the prior three years.

ChannelBest forImportant limit
MiCOURTFiled charges, hearings, pleas, outcomesInformational, participating courts, some older files absent
ICHATReportable Michigan felony and serious-misdemeanor historyNo warrants or suppressed records
Mason County JailCurrent Mason County booking and custodyNo public online roster was located
OTISMDOC prison, probation, and parole statusDoes not list county-only detainees

A “no result” from one Mason County criminal records channel is therefore not a statewide clearance. Fingerprints may be missing, the Mason County prosecutor may not have filed a charge, a Mason County court may not publish an older file, or the person may be held locally rather than under MDOC authority.

The Mason County courts directory is the official bridge to the Mason County trial courts.

The directory keeps court records distinct from jail, prosecutor, and supervision records, which reduces wrong-office requests.

Note: A court file can remain public after release from jail, while a fresh booking may appear before any court filing exists.

Official Background Checks in Michigan

The Michigan State Police, Criminal Justice Information Center maintains the central repository. Its Internet Criminal History Access Tool, known as ICHAT, permits a public name-based search for $10. The product covers reported Michigan felonies and serious misdemeanors punishable by more than 93 days. It excludes warrants, suppressed records, federal cases, minor municipal matters, and events that were not reported to CJIC.

For self-review when identity certainty matters, a fingerprint-based record is more reliable than a name match. Mason County Jail corrections staff provide Live Scan service around the clock at 306 N. Delia Street. Call 231-843-3475 first to confirm the request type, required identification, control number, current charge, and whether an appointment is needed. The requesting agency or program normally supplies the correct fingerprint request code.

The Michigan State Police criminal-history overview explains the repository and public access product.

That state guidance makes clear that ICHAT is not a replacement for checking Mason County court files or current jail custody.

Published charges are $10 for a standard ICHAT search and $18 for an FBI Identity History Summary. The official county pages reviewed did not publish a Mason County Live Scan charge or a current clerk copy and certification schedule, so confirm those amounts before requesting service.

ICHAT Search Fields for Mason County Records

ICHAT works from biographic identifiers rather than a county court case number. A careful search uses the legal name, known spelling variants, middle name, and exact date of birth. Race and sex controls may help narrow candidates when the live portal offers them. The result may show descriptors and reported arrest, charge, and disposition cycles, but a same-name return alone does not prove identity.

A statewide self-check can also have a federal layer. The FBI Identity History Summary is subject-only and uses biographic data plus fingerprints. Its Electronic Departmental Order process charges an $18 FBI fee, while approved channelers may add their own charge.

The FBI electronic identity-history portal is the direct federal submission channel.

Kinds of Criminal Records

A Mason County criminal record changes as a matter moves from an officer to the jail, prosecutor, court, and state repository. The Mason County arresting agency writes the incident and arrest report. Jail staff make the booking record. The Mason County prosecutor chooses charges, and the court clerk records litigation. MSP CJIC later matches fingerprint-supported arrest data with reported case outcomes.

  • Incident and arrest reports describe allegations, officer actions, witnesses, and the circumstances of an arrest.
  • Booking records document intake identifiers, fingerprints, photograph, custody, bond, and release processing.
  • Court files contain complaints, charges, hearings, pleas, orders, judgment, sentence, and financial entries.
  • Repository histories connect reportable arrest cycles with prosecutor and court disposition reports.
  • Warrant, supervision, and registry records serve distinct judicial, MDOC, and public-safety functions.

These files may disagree without any one of them being false. A booking allegation can change after prosecutor review, a dismissed count can remain in a court chronology, and a Mason County detainee will not appear in the state prison locator. The creating office is the right place to correct its part of the chain.

Mason County Courthouse Record Counters

The Historical Mason County Courthouse at 304 E. Ludington Avenue is the core court-record building. The County Clerk maintains 51st Circuit criminal files through Court Services, where staff searches records and issues certified copies. Circuit Records uses 231-845-1445, while the general clerk number is 231-843-8202. The 79th District Court, reached at 231-843-4130, handles misdemeanors and the opening stages of felony cases.

The Mason County Prosecuting Attorney occupies the courthouse’s second floor and reviews police reports before choosing what to charge. That office is not the Mason County court clerk. Its file may contain prosecutorial material, while the clerk’s public case file holds the official register, filings, orders, judgment, and sentence. Prosecutor records requests follow that constitutional office’s separate policy.

Mason County Criminal Records: What They Contain

A repository history centers on identity and fingerprint-supported cycles. A court record centers on a case number and filed events. A booking record centers on physical intake and custody. Matching the fields across all three can explain why the same event looks different as it moves through Mason County’s justice system.

Name & IdentifiersLegal and alias names, birth information, descriptors, and state or tracking numbers when public.
Arrest / Booking DataAgency, arrest and intake dates, booking number, alleged charges, bond, hold, and release or transfer.
Charges & StatutesCount numbers, offense text, citation, and felony or misdemeanor level as filed or reported.
DispositionPending, dismissed, convicted, acquitted, or another final result for each count.
SentenceJail or prison terms, probation, fines, costs, restitution, and related orders when public.
Custody / SupervisionCounty detention, MDOC prison, probation, parole, discharge, or release status within each system’s scope.

Protected personal identifiers, full financial-account data, victim and minor information, juvenile matters, and legally nonpublic files do not belong in ordinary public results. A clerk-certified document carries more authority than a screen print from an informational portal.

Register of actions
The clerk’s dated list of case events, filings, hearings, and orders.
Bind-over
The transfer of a felony from 79th District Court to 51st Circuit Court after the preliminary stage.
Disposition
The outcome entered for a charge, such as dismissal, conviction, or acquittal.
Set aside
Michigan relief that makes an eligible conviction nonpublic for ordinary purposes.

Two Mason County Courts, One Felony Path

A felony commonly starts in Mason County’s 79th District Court with a complaint, arraignment, probable-cause conference, and preliminary examination. If the matter is bound over, the prosecutor files an information in 51st Circuit Court. That second file then carries the Circuit arraignment, pretrial work, plea or trial, judgment, and sentence. Searching only one court can leave the Mason County criminal history incomplete.

MiCOURT’s public result is informational. Some participating courts show criminal convictions only when sentencing occurred within seven years, and attachments are not assured. Its current terms also warn that some attempted felonies under MCL 750.92 may display “FELONY” as the charge level even when the attempt is legally a misdemeanor. Verify the charging statute and court record rather than relying on that label.

A useful clerk request names the court and case number and asks for a register of actions, complaint or information, judgment of sentence, plea form, or a specific public order. Mason County’s Court Case Lookup follows the full process and explains the two court files.

Note: A dismissed booking allegation is not automatically deleted from every agency file, and dismissal is not the same as a conviction.

Michigan Public Access Laws

Michigan uses different access rules for executive records and court files. Police and sheriff reports may be requested from the creating agency under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, subject to exemptions. Judicial records are obtained from the District or Circuit clerk under court rules because Michigan courts are not public bodies covered by FOIA.

Key Michigan authorities:

MCL 15.231 et seq. establishes access to local and executive public records, subject to lawful limits.

MCL 15.243 permits redaction or withholding for privacy, active enforcement, and other listed interests.

MCL 28.243 governs Michigan repository information and criminal-history dissemination.

MCL 780.621 et seq. controls applications and automatic setting aside of eligible convictions.

Mason County’s general FOIA coordinator does not process Sheriff or Prosecutor requests because those constitutional offices maintain separate policies. Send sheriff-created report requests to the Sheriff’s Office and prosecutor records requests to the Prosecuting Attorney. A written Michigan FOIA response is generally due within five business days, with a written extension of up to ten business days available, but a response date is not always the production date.

Mason County Warrant Record Verification

No official Mason County active-warrant public search or documented sheriff app warrant tool was found. ICHAT expressly excludes warrants, and OTIS is a corrections locator rather than a warrant database. A blank return from either system cannot clear a warrant concern.

Start with the Mason County Sheriff at 231-843-3475. For a misdemeanor case, felony preliminary matter, or missed District Court appearance, contact the 79th District Court at 231-843-4130. Circuit felony matters go to 51st Circuit Records at 231-845-1445. MiCOURT may show a related public case event, and a narrow request can seek releasable sheriff warrant information when ordinary counter service is not enough.

If the issue concerns your own warrant, confirm the issuing court, ask for appearance and bond instructions, obtain legal advice if desired, follow the court’s direction, keep proof of recall or satisfaction, and later confirm that the relevant systems were updated. An unofficial list is not a safe basis for action, and private people should never attempt to detain someone.

Note: Search warrants and affidavits may remain suppressed while disclosure could harm an investigation, safety, or another protected interest.

Restricted, Sealed & Expunged Records

Ordinary public results exclude or redact juvenile proceedings, protected victim and minor details, personal identifiers, sealed material, suppressed repository records, and convictions that have been set aside. A missing Mason County criminal record can reflect a lawful restriction, not a conclusion that an event never happened.

Michigan calls its relief process a set-aside, though expungement is also widely used. An eligible person may apply in the court of conviction under MCL 780.621. Eligibility depends on the number and type of convictions, waiting periods, sentence completion, exclusions, pending cases, and later convictions. The 79th District or 51st Circuit clerk can identify the local file and provide the official judgment or certified record needed for the application process.

After an order, keep certified copies and recheck the court and MSP record. If a state entry still appears, use the MSP modify or update process and provide the certified order. Separate police and jail records may require their own legal analysis because a dismissal or set-aside does not mean each agency copy vanished at the same time.

Michigan Clean Slate for Mason County Cases

Michigan’s automatic Clean Slate process began on April 11, 2023. Subject to statutory caps and exclusions, eligible 92-day misdemeanors may be set aside after seven years, eligible misdemeanors punishable by 93 days or more after seven years, and eligible felonies after ten years. Pending charges, intervening convictions, offense exclusions, and counting rules can block automatic relief.

Automatic and court-filed relief are not interchangeable. A court application requires the Mason County case, judgment, fingerprints and other prescribed materials, service on required agencies, and a hearing when scheduled. Automatic processing runs through state repository systems, and MSP warns that changes may not appear at once in every downstream record.

The MSP Michigan Clean Slate page states the current automatic set-aside framework.

City-by-City Criminal Records in Mason County

Mason County has only two incorporated cities, Ludington and Scottville. City police or local policing channels create incident records, while city FOIA coordinators route requests for records held by city government. Neither city operates a separate municipal court. Cases from both places move through the 79th District Court, and felony cases later bound over proceed in 51st Circuit Court.

Ludington is the county seat and the larger police-record source. Scottville’s downloadable FOIA packet is its key local access channel. Villages and townships should not be called cities merely to create a third guide.

Mason County Records on Delia Street

Several custodians sit close together on North Delia Street but hold different Mason County records. Sheriff administration at 302 N. Delia handles sheriff-created law-enforcement material during weekday office hours. The adjacent Mason County Jail at 306 N. Delia is staffed around the clock for custody work. The MDOC Probation and Parole Office is housed in a Sheriff’s Department annex and manages state supervision, not county jail bookings.

The jail opened in 1958 with 45 beds and expanded to 104 beds in 1999. A kitchen was added in 2006, and work crews began in 2013. Those local details explain its role as the county detention facility, but it still does not function as an online record portal. No official public roster or recent booking log was located, so call 231-843-3475 to ask about present custody.

The office’s place in the Sheriff complex does not turn an MDOC supervision file into a jail or sheriff record.

Federal systems add one more boundary. PACER holds federal court dockets, and the Bureau of Prisons locator covers federal custody rather than Mason County jail detention or MDOC supervision.

The official PACER service is the source for federal court cases.
